"Just What the Doctor Ordered" "...We will definitely be back! ...We needed a getaway so badly. Eden Vale Inn was just what the doctor ordered!" Generally my husband and I just kind of blow through Placerville California on our way to Lake Tahoe, but we decided to stay at a bed and breakfast in Placerville...I took a chance with Eden Vale after checking out their website ... a choice that I am so thankful to have taken." "The inn is absolutely wonderful. It is modern, charming and, has kept that rustic feel to it...Every intention of visiting downtown Placerville went out the window as soon as I stepped foot through the front door. The two days I was there, I didn't leave the grounds, except to walk down the road to their neighbour's house to check out the miniature horses. The gardens are spectacular, meandering paths, various areas to sit (I love the way the chairs are grouped together for you and a friend), lovely, lovely statues, fountains and garden art. It was total Zen and I felt so peaceful and relaxed there... Gayle and Mark have created an upscale but homey atmosphere. Walking around in my pajamas, going up the stairs for coffee or hot chocolate, grabbing a movie (from their very well selected collection) was as comfortable as being in my own home...

Being a very energetic person, it is not always easy for me to relax -- I had no problem at Eden Vale. The fire pit out by the pond is fantastic at night. My husband and I had a fire both nights we were there, and we watched the stars come in and just begin to fill up the sky. It is very clear there and the sky was really lit up with stars -- it reminded me of being at summer camp! I cannot say enough about the rooms -- classy and comfortable, great bedding, the rain shower head in the shower was an added delight, and the soaking tubs were amazing. They are deep enough (and large enough) for two people to sit in and you sink right up to your neck! We loved the bathroom amenities that were provided.

The breakfasts were to die for -- fruit bowls, scones, quiche, potatoes -- my husband was in seventh heaven because he doesn't eat that well at home! My husband and I travel quite often and have stayed in many bed and breakfast inns and this is defiantly ranked up there high amongst our favorites. I highly recommend this bed and breakfast. I definitely will be visiting Eden Vale again."

We live just up the road in "Sutter Creek, but it was the great break that we needed for two days: to celebrate a birthday and an anniversary. This B&B located near Coloma and Placerville is near a number of wineries and historical attractions. Mark and Gayle have done an amazing job transforming their barn and grounds into relaxing get away. The breakfasts are varied, plentiful and good and, served in a sunny dining area. "The Eden Vale Inn, between Coloma and Placerville, CA, captured our hearts the moment we drove up the driveway. Upon entering the home you are immediately filled with a warmth and belonging. The history of the 20 year labor of love was so rich and the home's lovely world collections are so artfully displayed... Restoring this BARN, was brilliantly executed in fine (custom, Craftsman, country, southwest, Tibetan, European, modern, fen shui) style. Gayle's plant knowledge and sense of decor, fills every pathway with a visual delight, pairing old and new finds, as decorations between all the fantastic foliage and fountains. The surrounding pastures of horses and ponies add to the lovely views. The use of bowling balls placed along the west fencetop is visually pleasing as it leads you up to the pond..."

This time Barbara really "knocked it out of the park" with her Blueberry Cream Cheese French Toast! She is the Innsitter here at Eden Vale Inn B&B in Placerville, and It was amazing to watch her work. She served it with Blueberry Maple Syrup and fresh cut fruit from local gardens in the Sierra Foothills, which besides the melons, had three kinds of berries, kiwi and bananas. Our guests were full and happy as they drove away, saying, "we will be back again!".

"Placerville is about 15/20 minutes and has cute small town. We ate a great dinner at Zachary Jacques and a great lunch at Heyday cafe-seemed like lots of choices in area. Only 5 minutes from rafting meet up spot. Very convenient to what we had planned. 2 nights for the area would be ideal, maybe 3, unfortunately we only had one-maybe another time! We'd definitely return...Great shower, nice bedding, all amenities well done. Inn is cool converted, totally overhauled barn that innkeepers will tell you about if you want to know. Breakfast was on time, well done with fruit, yogurt, homemade granola as well as a hot egg dish, scones, coffee, juice. Everything was great-wish we could have stayed longer."

"My friends and family stayed at the Eden Vale Inn B &B May14th thru the 17th. The place was a dream. The grounds were so well planned and kept... Best of all were the staff: they were the best...The house itself was a delight with tasteful decorations all done in a very upscale fashion...I highly recommend this truly great vacation retreat."

"We spent two nights in the Stone Pine room at the Eden Vale Inn Bed and Breakfast located near Placerville, and Lotus. I cannot bestow enough praise on the B&B and the staff/owners. As other guests commented, 'there is nothing they haven't thought of.' The rooms were immaculate and I always appreciate a friendly house cat and dog, who were mostly outside pets. I also loved the many birds, lizards, frogs, and alleged fish present. It was just fantastic..."

"... The way the room patios are designed makes you feel like you are alone in nature. I recommend swimming in the pond for a bit of afternoon exercise. There is also a great bike riding road on Deer Valley Road, and a huge mountain bike area nearby."

"Someone's gotta tell Huell Houser about this place... talk about California's Gold"...Eden Vale Inn in Coloma near Placerville, CA, captured our hearts the moment we drove up the driveway. Upon entering the home you are immediately filled with a warmth and belonging. The history of the 20 year labor of love was so rich and the home's lovely world collections are so artfully displayed...
...I have to mention the food! The chef and innkeeper, Kirsten, is such a culinary wizard. The amazing stratas, quiches, stollens, scones, fresh fruits and famous home made granolas are just a tiny taste of what she can do..."

"The gardens are amazing... Gayles's plant knowledge and sense of decor, fills every pathway with a visual delight, pairing old and new finds, as decorations between all the fantastic foliage and fountains. The large horse watering trough at the lower back side of the house, has a flowing spigot, trickling into its reflective pollywog pool...The use of bowling balls placed along the west fencetop is visually pleasing as it leads you up to the pond. A postcard picture in a glorious valley. Just set a spell in those Addirondak chairs and kick off your shoes. Who could ask for more?
You'll amazed at this Zen country chic place. You'll return, just like we will - soon! Thanks for our wonderful stay... Now we know where Eden is..."

The setting of Eden Vale is reminscent of the south of France--rolling hills, ponds, fruit trees. The decor of the inn is not the frou-frou "grandma's house" we are used to in B & B's. The house is an old barn redone in a contemporary style (rather Zen in the feeling) with touches of Italy and the US Southwest complete every amenity one can think of--big bathrooms, robes, cd players, down comforters..." “The Eden Vale Inn is a true gem among Bed and Breakfasts. The entire Inn from the beautiful gardens and pond, the amazing common rooms, the luxurious bedrooms with European showers and outdoor Japanese soaking tubs for two.”

“ The owner and Inn Keeper Mark was extremely helpful on many levels. I had planned a trip to Placerville for white water rafting on the American River. The original trip I had planned was canceled. "Would wake up and touch the button for fireplace, hit the read-in-bed spotlight, wander the gardens, sit by the pond or in hammock w/a good book. Gem of a property and would highly recommend. Off the beaten track but we liked that too. Just what the doctor ordered to unwind. It was a weekend of pure relaxation, and area has some great vineyards for wine tasting, hiking, state park in Coloma to get your history on the Gold Rush. We could have spent a week and it still wouldn't have been enough, especially of Eden Vale."

"We had an impromptu weekend at the Eden Vale Inn in Placerville. It was wonderful due to the tranquil environment as well as the gracious hosts Mark and Gayle. They are attentive yet not intrusive. We were playing scrabble in low light and Gayle offered to turn the switch to give us more light. Mark recommended many beautiful sights with special views for us to go to in the area, which led to very memorable days."

Apple Hill Blossoms are georgous in Spring: Not only are the participating ranches busy getting their activities together, but a Trail Run has been organized. One of the Folsom Trail Runners had the following to say: This is a great trail. It's diverse and has challenges yet with amazing views. This will give Napa a run for their merlot. This is one of the few places in California where the trail, views and spectacular wine come to party!

"A recent conversion of a country "mansion" the Eden Vale Inn has many sophisticated convenience features, yet retains the beautiful charms of its roots. All aspects of the property were delightful to us, beginning with our room and the inside common areas, and continuing to the luxuriant exterior surrounding property. The inn-keepers (Mark, Gayle, and Kirsten) treated us with wonderful warmth and hospitality, as did all of their staff-members. South Fork American River Trail Nears Completion

Imagine being able to travel on foot, bicycle or horse from the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area all the way to the rural beauty of the South Fork American River in the Coloma-Lotus Valley. Imagine doing so on a trail dedicated to recreation and the enjoyment of oak woodlands, conifer, chaparral, and the riverside.

That long-held hope is now on its way to being a reality. The final land parcel that completes the 20-mile route (see a PDF map) was sold by a couple who decided to protect its natural habitat for the public to enjoy. Funds that purchased it were provided by the State Wildlife Conservation Board, the State Resources Agency's River Parkways Grant Program, and over 400 private donors. All this, plus the work that had been done on the rest of the trail route, was coordinated by the American River Conservancy (ARC).

The 20-mile trail has been 20 years in the making. Its completion is a source of great excitement for those who have been hoping and working for it since 1989, as well as the many who have come along since then and enjoy the prospect of traveling so far in the richness of nature in their own back yards.

Funds are still needed to bring the trail into reality. The ARC estimates it will cost $175K to complete trail construction and provide a few pedestrian bridges at stream crossings and interpretive signage at the trailheads. The official ribbon cutting is planned for the late spring of 2010. Contributions to the South Fork American River Trail Campaign can be sent to: The American River Conservancy, P.O. The completion of the South Fork American River Trail brings an even greater dream closer to reality. With regional coordination, it could become a key segment within a larger regional trail that would span the approximately 50 miles from downtown Sacramento (Sutter’s Fort) to Coloma (Sutter’s Mill). Parcel by parcel, this dream is moving to reality.

Wood Fired Oven, Eden Vale Inn Bed and Breakfast

Gayle and I took a trip to San Franciso and did a lot of poking around kitchen stores. We came back with four more cookbooks including several on wood fired grilling and wood fired ovens. We're looking to expand the cuisine baked in the wood fired oven at Eden Vale Inn Bed and Breakfast near Placerville.

We stoked wood in the oven for about seven hours raising the temperature to about 700 degrees. The remaining coals were gathered into a pile and Gayle placed a whole Kabocha squash right in the coals. Meanwhile, slices of Delicata squash coated with olive oil were sizzling on a cast iron skillet placed in the oven. She picked some mustard greens out of the garden and tossed them on top. Once the Kabocha squash reached 150 degrees internally it was pulled out of the coals and split in half horizontally. The seeds were scooped out and the Delicata squash, mustard greens and some goat cheese were put in the cavity and the meat of the squash was pulled away from the sides. The top was drizzled with a mint-infused red wine vinaigrette. The verdict? Fabulous!

If you like big Sierra Reds you'll like Crystal Basin Cellars in Camino just off Hwy 50 east of Placerville. The drive from Eden Vale Inn, on the other side of Placerville, is about 25 minutes. Many other Carson Road Wineries and Vinyards are nearby. Mike Owen and Peter, the wine maker, make a wide variety of wines owning in part to the fact that they buy their grapes from other local Sierra Foothill vinyards. This allows more flexibility in trying new varities and blends.

There is lots to like in the extensive selection at this El Dorado County winery. I came home with a mixed case that included Viognier, Zinfandel, Sarah, Barbara, and Mouvedre. A freak snowstorm December 6 and 7, 2009 brought snow all the way down to Sacramento, CA. Placerville got about 18" at their 1800' elevation. Eden Vale Inn at 1100' got about 6". The snow was wet and heavy and broke tree limbs all over these low eleveations. The limbs fell on the power and phone lines causing many El Dorado County residents to be without power for up to four days. Many, over a week later are still without phone service. Then the weather turned very cold and kept the frozen snow for five days until it rained and washed it all way. There were broken water pipes all over the Sierra Foothills in California. In 25 years here we've never seen anything like this. Mark

A Great Blue Heron was fishing in the pond today at Eden Vale Inn B&B near Placerville in the Sierra Foothills. Fall is still to be found as many of the native oaks have not yet dropped their leaves. I went hiking today at Wildman near Chile Bar on the South Fork of the American River maybe 7 miles above Coloma. This December 5th was a beautiful day, cool even cold but the sun was out. A great day to scarmble down the mountain through the Blue Oaks to the American River in the Sierra Foothills winter. And, free of snow.

Thanksgiving 2009, Eden Vale Inn Placerville

Today was a beautiful day in the Sierra Foothills of El Dorado County. At Eden Vale Inn near Placerville we cooked our turkey and vegetables in the wood fired oven. While the turkey was baking we sat out by the pond in the warm sun and drank some Primitivo wine from Iverson's Vineyard and Winery in Fairplay http://www.iversonwinery.com/.

Mark's brother in law Jeff had brined the turkey for about 36 hours using a Williams and Sonoma mix. They plan to make their own brine next year. The brine makes the turkey moist.

Mark built a fire in the oven last night and rebuilt it this morning. Temperature was over 900 degrees after sweeping the fire and ash out. We had cooked several turkey's previously at around 550 degrees with good success. First we seared in the juices, 900 degrees did this in a few minutes. To mitigate the high temperature we placed the turkey near the front of the oven and spun him around 180 degrees every 20 minutes or so. The turkey came out great as well as the vegetables and curry bread. Our family really enjoyed the day. This turkey was not for our full house of guests. They were all off at their respective family gatherings.

Today was a fine fall day in the Sierra Foothills. Lighting seemed perfect for pictures of the Girard Vineyards, gardens and views looking toward Coloma on the American River. I came away with a couple bottles of their 2007 Rose'. The 2008 had just been released but was not quite aged yet. The 2007 is perfect, citrus with the sweetness cut with just a slight tannic bitter.

The north side of Eden Vale Inn B&B is decked and trellised with Incense Cedar. The cedar was cut from the Sierra Nevada forests and milled at Kubich Lumber in Grass Valley, CA. Kubich is sort of a time warp. They have and old fashioned buzz saw. We like the rough sawn saw marks. It fits the rustic character of the Old West still visible in El Dorado County.
